On holiday with the average NZ family: day 2 Boy bites off more than he can chew
30.12.2003
By GRAHAM REID, Special Holiday Correspondent

An apprentice panelbeater from Pakuranga provoked a hostile response from a holidaymaker in the Far North when his car kicked up gravel in Kakamoana Caravan Park yesterday afternoon.
Seventeen-year old Paul Ashton had been visiting friends in a tent at the quiet holiday camp but when leaving, his green Torana spun in gravel and stones were sprayed on to a nearby caravan.
"It was an accident, but when I got out to apologise this old guy just went nuts at me," said Ashton last night. "His eyes were popping out and he was swearing at me and everything. So I just gave him the fingers and drove off. That's when he really got mad. Dickhead."
Caravan owner Bruce Riley-Thompson, of Howick, said the family had just settled down to watch the news when he heard the car start up and the sound of gravel hitting their caravan.
"I knew exactly who it was," said Riley-Thompson. "I'd seen the little thug sitting near that tent with his mates earlier. They were laughing and reading magazines and one of them waved at me in a supercilious manner.
"But they've bitten off more than they can chew if they try to take me on."
The caravan park owners refused to comment on the incident last night - the second in as many days involving the Riley-Thompson family - but daughter Amber said, "It was no big deal. Dad was just acting like a dickhead basically, and the boy was kinda nice. I hope he comes back."
* The Herald will report daily on the holiday of this average New Zealand family.
Taste of summer for caravan fans
CARAVANNERS can forget winter next month and bask in thoughts of sunnier days ahead as they live the dream at G-Mex in Manchester.
For the Caravan and Motorhome Show - in association with the Manchester Evening News - will run from January 22-25 and visitors can enjoy a day at the seaside as well as a "trip" to Spain.
A beach-themed area will provide a blast of summer sunshine to visitors needing a break from the wet weather and freezing temperatures at the biggest leisure exhibition of its kind in the north west.
There is even a Spanish Fiesta theme night on January 23, with cooking demonstrations, traditional Flamenco dancers and language teachers on hand to give lessons in useful Spanish phrases for those planning to tow further afield.
And a travel expert will be on hand to advise future holidaymakers of where to visit in Spain.
Ex-Coronation Street star Tracy Shaw will open the show, which will have more caravans and motorhomes than ever before, and among the exhibitors are leading names in the caravanning world.
"The Manchester show has been growing so fast and becoming increasingly popular over the past few years that the only way to accommodate all those who wanted to exhibit was to make two shows - one for caravans and motorhomes and the other for holiday homes," explained show director Simon Coe.
"The result is the Caravan and Motorhome Show, that is second to none, and the National Holiday Home Show from March 18-21, which will be the only consumer show dedicated to the holiday home enthusiast."
The Caravan Club alone now has 850,000 members, who spend a collective total of around seven million nights a year caravanning. In 2002, the UK turnover of the camping and caravanning equipment market was £1.2bn. With more than a million caravans and motorhomes in use, caravanning has become one of the fastest-growing leisure activities in the country.
Last year, visitor figures reached a highest level of almost 30,000, a nine per cent increase on last year.
The Caravan and Motorhome Show is at Manchester G-MEX from January 22 - 25. Ticket prices - Advance: Adults £6, seniors £5.50, children 15 and under free. On the door: Adults £7.50, seniors £6.50
