National feast of Lanterns

We are really pleased to say that the Camping and Caravanning Club have invited us to the National feast of Lanterns, we will be there from Weds in the National Council area (Red)and I am really looking forward to it, as it is the first rally we have been on that isn't a Touring and Tenting one.

The World’s biggest annual camping and caravanning rally – The National Feast of Lanterns - comes to the Kent County Showground, Detling from 2-4 September 2005, bringing the Wonders of the World with it.

The National Feast of Lanterns (NFOL) is organised by the largest and longest-established Club in the world for all forms of camping, The Camping and Caravanning Club.

Each year NFOL is based in a different region of the country, and this year the Club’s South Eastern Region is the host, with the sights and sounds of ‘World Festivals’ promising a weekend of carnival and music to reflect the theme.

The event is based on the Chinese Feast of Lanterns¹ and involves almost 10,000 Camping and Caravanning Club members with up to 4,000 camping units from all across the UK dressing their caravans, motorhomes or tents with a fabulous array of decorations and illuminations for a weekend of festivities.

The highlight of the event is a Saturday evening parade. This time around, there will be floats and fancy-dress to reflect the different countries and locations around the world, from China, to Rio, to our very own Notting Hill - each of the Regions and Sections of The Camping and Caravanning Club take part for the pleasure and entertainment of all.

The very first Feast of Lanterns was held in Dorking, Surrey in 1921. This time it will take place for the 77th time.

History
1) Known as Teng-Chieh, the Chinese Feast of Lanterns celebrates the safe return of a mandarin’s daughter after she fell into a lake while picking water lilies. To celebrate, the Chinese exchange gifts and good wishes and decorate their houses with coloured streamers and lanterns in all shapes and sizes.
2) National Feast of Lanterns takes place on an annual basis. However, the 1939 event was cancelled when war was declared and none were held during the war; in 1972, a last-minute planning problem caused its cancellation. Consequently, 75 have taken place from 1921 to 2005.
3) Each year, NFOL is held in a different region of the UK and is organised by voluntary officers from The Camping and Caravanning Club in that particular Region.
4) National Feast of Lanterns is only open to Camping and Caravanning Club members.

If you are interested in caravan and camping rallies, both ourselves and the Camping and Caravanning club hold them regularly.

What's new in 2005

Just thought I would update you all as to what's happening at the moment and it has been a really busy few months with lots of plans seeming to come to a head at the same time.

T&T - Our baby has been under a lot of strain lately and this is still on going as we work through the details of the move, but nothing will happen until we are really sure we are moving for the right reasons. Having said that I have updated lots of the areas and a fair few articles have gone on lately along with some new competitions later in the summer.

A lot of work has also been going on behind the scenes with the rallies and campsites.

New this year are 3 new commercial websites 2 of which have been built from scatch and will enable us to branch out with T&T

The new sites in no particular order are:

Selectcamp UK

Touring and Tenting became the UK agents for Selectcamp a couple of months ago but the site is only now starting to find it's feet.

Selectcamp is for self catering holidays in France, Holland and Italy (Spain next year we hope) where all you need to take are your clothes, we supply everything else. The accommodation luxury fully equipped holiday homes and tents so if you know anyone that may be interested please let them know.

Cades campsites of France

Cades campsites in France is a huge project and although not T&T's I have designed and built the site and it is very much a work in progress at the moment, with over 10,000 campsites it is causing me some minor teething problems but it's getting there.

The site really is a backup for the cades campsites of france guides, produced by our own NickCB who has put a huge amount of time and effort into collating all the information.

Last but not least is Touring and Tenting online which is our secure online store for camping equipment and has been set up initialy with awnings, tents and breathable ground sheets. More products will follow as time goes on I hope.

Thats about it for now, but please feel free to visit any of the above and as always your opinions are what matter so please let me know

Missing person

(posted on behalf of Lisa )

I am hoping that you may be able to help.

Mark Linkleter, a close friend of ours went missing on 30th July this year. He has a tent, his passport, driving licence and a small amount of cash.

The tent is a royal blue 2-man dome tent with orange trim.

You can look at Mark's picture on a website we have set up on http://www.marklinkleter.co.uk

Mark lInkleter
We also have a poster you can download on this site. If you get a chance, please print off a copy and take it to the campsite you visit next. Ask the owners if they will display it.

Mark has been under pressure on his family farm, and his family are desperate to hear from him or at least to know that he is safe and well.

Please contact Northumbria police if you spot him (01661) 872555

Thank you

Lisa
